NATIONAL DENTAL CENTRE INTRODUCES REVOLUTIONARY TECHNOLOGY


The National Dental Centre (NDC) recently intriduced a revolutionary technology and technique for giving local anaesthesia (LA) to patients before dental treatment, without the pain of conventional injections. The Wand, a computerised system, delivers local anawsthetic to patients in a way that significantly reduces the pain and discomfort of injections in the mouth. For those who risk their oral health by putting off dental visits because they find the routine injections unpleasant, this state-of-the-art technology could very well put an end to that.

25 May 2005 TOOTH-IN-EYE (OOKP) SURGERY HELP 8 REGAIN SIGHT

In July 2004, surgeons from the Singapore National Eye Centre and the National Dental Centre reported the first successful case of the Osteo-Odonto Keratoprosthesis (OOKP) 'Tooth-in-eye' surgery in Singapore, the first of its kind in the region.

Since the first successful case in a 19-year old boy from Thailand in June 2004, 12 more OOKP surgery have been successfully performed. Ten of these patients are from overseas, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand, and 2 local patients. This surgery has now become a viable option for many blind patients who have lost their sight due to severe damage to their corneas and front part of the eye and eyelids. The list of local and regional patients awaiting the possibility of this surgery continues to grow.

4 February 2005 DENTAL TECHNICIANS' TRAINING COURSE SEES FIRST FRUITS

Ten trainees from the first cohort of the National ITE Certificate (NITEC) in Dental Technology training programme received their certificates after successfully completing a programme which provides trainees with technical skills and dental knowledge in fabricating dental appliances. The graduation ceremony was held at the National Dental Centre Auditorium on 4 February 2005. The last graduation for dental technicians in Singapore was held 10 years ago, in 1995.
